A Clinical Observation 208 Cases of Typhoid Fever



Abstract
The authors have reviewed a series of 208 patients with typhoid fever, who admitted to Seoul Red Cross Hospital from Jan. 1974 to Dec. 1978.
The following results were obtained:
1) The ratio between male and female was 1.2 : 1 and the peak age incidence was in the 3rd decade, amounting to 35% of the total. Tile seasonal prevalence of typhoid fever was predominant in summer (40.8%).
2) Of 208 patients, the majority, 171 patients (82. 1%), were admitted within three weeks from the onset of symptoms and 115 patients within 2 weeks.
3) The clinical manifestations on admission were fever (91.8%), chill (73.6%), headache (53¢¥.8%), abdominal pain (41.8%), hepatomegaly (47.1%) and splenomegaly (44.2%).
4) Widal reaction was positive, defined as a titer of above 1 : 160, in 107 patients (56. 9%).
5) The blood culture for Salmonella typhi was positive in 69 patients (38.3% and the urine culture was positive-in 31 patients (25.4%).
6) Complication were developed in 57 patients (27.4%). Among them, intestinal hemorrhage was most in 23 patients (11.0%) and next intestinal perforation in 20 patients (9.6%).
